Pollution is a sad reality in modern-day society. Fortunately, your Porsche has a very efficient emissions control system that removes 99% of dangerous chemicals from exhaust smoke. Not all vehicles are as efficient at emissions control, so you will need to get a regular car emissions check. As your Porsche dealer, we want to tell you more about this check and the procedure to follow.

How Often Should You Do a Car Emissions Check

Advice From Your Porsche Dealer: When Do You Need a Car Emissions Check?

How Often Do You Need an Emissions Check?

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) requires that almost every vehicle has an emissions check before it’s registered. After this initial check, the vehicle must be re-checked every two years. This applies to all gasoline, diesel, and bio-fueled vehicles that are five years old or older. They do offer exemptions for certain categories of vehicles.

The MVC doesn’t send a reminder letter. If you’re not exempt from emissions checks, you’ll need to check the date on the emissions sticker on your windshield.

Exemptions

Electric vehicles, diesel vehicles that are 1996 or older, motorcycles, historical vehicles, and vehicles up to five years old. If you buy a new Porsche, your car will receive a new car dealer inspection decal that’s valid for five years. If you buy a pre-owned Porsche, you’ll receive a green card (Form SS-19) that you can take to an emission testing center and receive a five-year exemption sticker.

Where Do You Get an Emissions Check?

The MVC has an inspection locator on their website that will help you find your closest center. There are two different center types: state facilities that are free and private testing centers that charge fees. Once you’ve found a center, you can book your appointment online.

State and private testing centers both require that you bring your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of New Jersey insurance. If you’re visiting a private center, you will also need to bring a means of payment.

Types of Emissions Tests

There are three types of emissions tests: the OBD inspection, the I/M dynamometer test, and the two-speed idle test. Your Porsche will usually take the OBD inspection. This test involves connecting your car’s computer to the center’s emissions testing system. The testing system will receive all the required information from your computer.

Completing the Test

When your Porsche passes the test, you’ll receive a new inspection sticker that’s valid for two years. The confirmation that your vehicle has passed the test will also be sent to the MVC.

If you don’t pass the test, the testing center will provide an emissions repair form. This form details the repairs that are necessary for your car to pass the test. You can then take your car to a state facility or your dealership to have the repairs completed.
